WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REVERSE SUN DAMAGE AND SKIN AGING


Based on our experience as nurses who consulted on burns and severe skin conditions at Johns Hopkins Hospital, we know the importance of healthy skin, the dangers of everyday sun exposure and what you can do about it. Did you know that sun damage is cumulative? Even when you have been using sunscreen, sun exposure increases the photoaging effects on the skin which is a major cause of skin aging. Photoaging is long term sagging, thinning, wrinkling, and uneven pigmentation of the skin caused by sunlight. Sun exposure breaks down the skin’s support structure (collagen and elastin) which lessens skin firmness and elasticity. Sunlight creates ‘free radical molecules’ that can damage the protein structure, DNA and cell membranes of skin cells. This damage causes an impact on the body’s aging process leading to skin wrinkling, spots, and potential cancerous skin lesions. The good news is that it’s not too late to treat the damage or to protect your skin. Antioxidants are the best defense to fight free radicals to treat and prevent the aging signs from the sun. They detect, attack and therefore neutralize the free radicals. They also help repair existing cellular damage. The most popular and powerful antioxidants for skin are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E and Selenium (a mineral). Others are rose hips, bilbery, lecithin, and milk thistle. Tips to Minimize Effects of Sun Aging. (1) You need a proper daily skin care regime using products with antioxidants on your face, neck and eye area. (2) Add antioxidants to your diet by eating more fruits and vegetables. Foods rich in antioxidants are blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, nuts and seeds. (3) Apply a moisturizer with fatty acids and antioxidants to properly hydrate the skin. Skin that is dry is more vulnerable to sun damage. (4) Wear a wide brimmed visor or hat. Visors are good for the face, but do not protect the ears. (5) Wear a protective sunscreen product with an SPF of at least 15 and carefully reapply as instructed. (6) Grab shade for a few minutes whenever possible especially during the hours of 10AM and 2PM when the sun is most damaging. (7) Drink 6 to 8 glasses of pure water to keep yourself hydrated and keep the toxins moving out of the body. (8) If you see any mole changes or other skin changes, see a dermatologist.
